Academic Appeal (Level 2, Dean's Review)

If a Statler College student wants to appeal an academic decision to the level 2 or Dean's review, please complete the academic appeal.

Academic Contract

Academic Contract should only last one term. There should be specific, measurable criteria detailed in the contract, so that the compliance of the student with terms of the contract can be easily determined each semester.

Acknowledgement of Academic Warning

Students whose major G.P.A. falls below 2.25 are placed on academic warning. These students must meet with their advisor for academic counseling and they must complete an Notice of Academic Warning. This document will be placed in the student's academic file and may become a factor in future academic action.

Application for Graduation

The Graduation Application can be completed on-line through your WVU Portal account:

  1. Log into your WVU Portal account: portal.wvu.edu
  2. Verify major(s), minor(s), certificate(s), and area of emphasis (if applicable) are correct. Report any discrepancies by sending an email to Statler Student Services
  3. Click on the STAR Tab
  4. Click on the link "Student Services and Housing"
  5. Click on "Student Records"
  6. Click on "Apply to Graduate
  7. For the curriculum term, select the most recent term in the drop down menu.

If you are graduating with two degrees (i.e. one degree in Aerospace Engineering and one degree in Mechanical Engineering) you will need to complete the application twice. After you submit the application for your first major, go back and submit the application a second time, for your second major.

Area of Emphasis Request

If you are a Statler College undergraduate student and you wish to add or remove an area of emphasis, please complete the Area of Emphasis Request Form.

Area of Emphasis Request for ETEC

If you are an engineering technology major and you wish to update your area of emphasis, please complete the Area of Emphasis Request for ETEC Form.

Change Major [outside Statler College]

Students wishing to change their major (outside the Statler College) must complete the transfer out request.

Change Major [CEE, CBE, IMSE, MAE, PNGE, MINE, LCSEE]

Students, who are not in the fundamental of engineering program, wishing to change their major within the Statler must complete a change major request.

Students wishing to add a second major outside of the Statler College must complete the change major [adding second major outside Statler College] request

Course Overload Request

Students wishing to register for more than 20 credit hours in one semester (14 credit hours in Summer Sessions) must obtain prior permission from the advisor and the Academic Standards Committee member. The completed Course Over-Load Permission Form must be submitted to the Office of Student Services, MRB 340, for the approval of the Associate Dean of Academics and Student Performance.

Course Substitution Request

Courses taken at other universities or colleges that are accepted at WVU as open credit may be substituted as WVU courses by completing the Course Substitution Request.

Credit By Exam

Students who are currently enrolled in WVU may receive credit for a course if they can demonstrate competency in the course content. The department offering the course determines evaluation standards for the student's competency. If skill and cognitive abilities are components of the course, then both are evaluated. Credit is given only when a satisfactory degree of competency is shown. Upon completion of requirements, the approved application and $50 are given to the Office of Student Services, MRB 340.

Certificate Request

If you are a Statler College undergraduate student and you with to add or remove a certificate, please complete the Certificate Request Form.

Curriculum Update

If you are a Statler College undergraduate student and you wish to update your catalog year, please complete the Curriculum Update Form.

Enroll in a 500-level Course for Undergraduate Credit

To enroll in appropriate 500 level courses for undergraduate credit:

  • Student must be classified as either a junior or senior
  • Student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00.
  • Undergraduate students may not enroll in 600 level courses.

The completed Application to Enroll in a 500 Level Course for Undergraduate Credit must be approved by the advisor and instructor prior to the time of enrollment and returned to the Office of Student Services, MRB 340, to obtain approval of the Associate Dean of Academics and Student Performance.

Independent Study for UG Students

Independent study courses, XXX 495, are used when a student requires knowledge in a particular area for successful completion of his/her program and a course of this type is not offered or expected to be offered in the immediate future in the University; further the students feels that he/she could not learn this course on his/her own but needs a structure and regular guidance from a faculty member that has expertise in this area. It is the responsibility of the student to see that this statement of course exceptions is prepared in writing. This petition must be completed before a student may be enrolled in the course.

Major Declaration

Students entering the Statler College are accepted into our fundamental of engineering program. During the first year, students learn about each engineering major so they can make an informed decision regarding their choice of major. You may declare your intent for a specific major at any time; doing so early helps the college plan for the future.  You may change your declaration of intended major at any time before you complete the entrance requirements.  To declare a major, please complete the this form

Math/Science Grade

To be eligible to receive a bachelor’s degree, a maximum of one math or science course with a grade of D+, D, or D- may apply toward a Statler College degree. To request a wavier for one math or science course grade, please complete the form.

  • I understand that I am only permitted to request a wavier for one course. Once submitted and reviewed, the Associate Dean of Academics and Student Performance will either grant or deny my request.
  • I understand the approval is not guaranteed.
  • If approved, I understand I cannot request an additional (or different) course for review.
  • I understand that all other math/science courses used for my degree must have a grade of C- or better.

Minor Request

If you are a Statler College undergraduate student and you wish to add or remove a minor, please complete the Minor Request Form.

Request for Course Override

This form is to be used to request an override for a course within the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. Please fill out this form in its entirety and submit. A detailed reason should be given for this request. The form will close on the first day of the semester.

Submission of this form DOES NOT guarantee your override will be approved. If approved, it is the students responsibility to register for the class before the end of the registration period. Questions can be sent to Statler-StudentServices@mail.wvu.edu

Senior Petition for Graduate Credit

Senior students at WVU and in colleges where WVU offers off-campus course work may enroll in appropriate 400 or 500 level courses for graduate credit:

  • Student must be within 12 semester hours of graduation.
  • Student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.0 scale
  • Combined graduate and undergraduate credit in a 500 level course must not exceed 18 hours in one semester or 6 hours in a six week summer session.
  • Coursework may not be counted for both undergraduate and graduate credit.
  • Undergraduate students may not enroll in 600 level courses.

The completed Senior Petition for Graduate Credit must be approved by the advisor and instructor prior to the time of enrollment and returned to the College Office of Student Services, MRB 340, to obtain approval of the Associate Dean of Academics and Student Performance.

Transient Application

Before taking a course at another institution, please discuss it with your advisor. The next step is to complete a transient application. This must be done before registering for a course at another institution.

The Statler College policy for approval of transient applications.

  • Beginning in the fall of 2019, student who has matriculated at WVU may take a maximum of eighteen (18) credit hours in transient, no more than nine (9) hours of which may be used to fulfill the major requirements indicated in the university catalog. Courses taken through study abroad, the military, or at other WVU system campuses are exempt from the 18/9 restriction.
  • If you do not have an overall G.P.A. of 2.00, the coursework will not be transferred to WVU until you have achieved a 2.00 G.P.A.
  • If you need the transient work as a prerequisite for a course you plan to take the next semester, you may not be permitted to register for that course until the transient work has transferred to WVU.
  • The Statler College Office of Student Services will begin processing summer transient requests after April 1.
