Concrete canoes on the water during competition

Concrete Canoe Team

As a Concrete Canoe team member, you'll participate in the student-led competition in which teams from across the United States and Canada design, build and race canoes made from concrete. Applying concrete design concepts, structural design modeling, and practice project management skills, will help prepare you for your career after graduation.

Hands-on with real-world rewards

The American Society of Civil Engineers offers real-world experiences through the Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams. Each team applies classroom knowledge to solve real tasks and compete regionally on design, execution, and performance. The organization has a long history of competition, and extensive networking opportunities with professionals and students from various universities.

Focus Areas

GEOTECHNICAL

Protect the society from environmental contaminants; design structures that can withstand the forces of nature; find ways to reclaim land that is unstable due to erosion or soil settling; and repair man-made structures, such as buildings and highways.

WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL

Take part in conducting environmental analysis and research that allows you to design accordingly. Construct and manage facilities that provide water for communities, like dames, reservoirs, flood control systems, water and wastewater treatment plants, and coastal harbors.

STRUCTURAL

Learn how to design, maintain and rehabilitate many of society’s unique structures, including various types of buildings, bridges and dams. Understand how to construct using materials such as concrete, steel, wood and a variety of composites to create a sound system.

TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

Become one of the key developers in the design, construction and management of transportation systems — highways, traffic control systems, airports, mass transit systems, railroads and inland waterways

CONSTRUCTION

Acquire a comprehensive skill set in construction planning, undertaking, control and management, encompassing project scheduling, cost estimating, earned value analysis, construction technologies, project delivery, contracting and asset management.

Undergraduate Research

At WVU, many of our faculty have established research areas. Take part in a hands-on experience that allows you and your peers to conduct cutting-edge research field of civil engineering, including transportation, bridges and infrastructure.

Undergraduate research opportunities

Nature of Program

As a civil engineer, you'll address critical issues affecting public health and economic vitality, such as waste disposal, environmental pollution, transportation systems, water resources and infrastructure and revitalization projects. Your work will involve blending technical skills with a focus on societal impact. The curriculum for civil engineering students emphasizes not only technical competence but also effective communication and collaboration with other professionals, incorporating elements from humanities, social studies, English, and economics to enhance their role in the community.
