Statler Student Volunteer and Organization of the Year

The following awards are available for WVU Statler College of Engineering students and student organizations. Applications are due by 11:59 PM on April 12, 2019. To submit the recommendation letters, go here.

Overall Requirements:

  • All recorded hours must have been performed during the 2018-2019 academic year (including summer, fall, and spring terms).
  • Must be a recognized student organization.
  • Student organizations must have a current SAC proposal on record. 
  • Applicants must complete an online application form. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. 
  • Letter of recommendation from someone in the community, your organization's advisor, or faculty member who can attest to your commitment and involvement in community outreach activities. Family members are not permitted to write your letter. 
Volunteer of the Year Award

Requirements:
  • Must be involved in at least one Statler student organization.
  • The volunteer can be involved with several different organizations and will be considered for the sum of total volunteer experiences across all organizations (within WVU and local community).
Questions:
  1. Personal statement, not to exceed 500 words, describing your participation in outreach events, including WVU events, communities, hospitals, charities, etc. The statement should describe why these activities are important to you and provide and in-depth description of one activity.
Award: $500 award for professional development.

Innovative Statler College Event of the Year

Requirements:
  • While outreach within the community will be considered, the main focus is on outreach within the university.
  • Projects are those that document a specific community need and have specific measurable objectives. 
Questions:
  1. How will this award be used to help further the mission of your organization?
  2. How did this organization promote student engagement , awareness, and education throughout the campus community?
  3. What innovative approach did your organization take to meet the need(s) of the WVU community? Please be sure to cover the following: clearly state the innovation, show that the activities reflect innovative or unique approached to solving a WVU community problem, shows that the actions engaged unlikely partners or unusual alliances, and highlights your organizations creativity and creative leadership.
Award: $500 award for student organization

First Time Student of the Year

Requirements:
  • Must be considered a first year student within the Statler College of Engineering (includes transfer students and freshmen).
Questions:
  1. Personal statement, not to exceed 500 words, describing your participation in outreach activities, including communities, hospitals, charities, etc. The statement should include why these activities are important to you and provide an in-depth description of one activity. 
Award: $500 award for professional development.

Student Organization Leader of the Year

Requirements: 

  • Must be involved in at least one Statler student organization.
  • Does not have to be an officer within the organization but must demonstrate specific leadership skills  
    • Questions:
      1. Personal statement not to exceed 500 words describing your participation in outreach activities and the leadership role(s) you took within them. The statement should describe why these activities are important to you and provide an in-depth description of one activity. 
      Award: $500 award for professional development.

      West Virginia Community Outreach Award

      Requirements:
      • While outreach within the University will be considered, the main focus is on outreach within the state of West Virginia.
      • Projects are those that document a community need and have specific measurable objectives and outcomes.
      Questions:
      1. How will this award be used to help further the mission of your organization?
      2. What innovative approach did your organization take to meet the need(s) of the community? Please be sure to cover the following: clearly state the innovation, show that the  activities reflect innovative or unique approaches  to solving a community problem, show that your actions engaged unlikely partners or unusual alliances, and highlight your organizations creativity and leadership.
      Award: $500 award for student organization.
