The Statler College will host two Engineering Challenge Camps the week of June 17.
Halliburton’s Females in the Field, a camp for high school girls, will provide hands-on activities and in-the-field experiences on topics ranging from mine safety to well drilling and bridge inspection. Twenty-nine campers from five states will be in attendance.
For middle schoolers, Engineering the Grand Challenges will immerse students in activities related to the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges. Highlights include activities related to infrastructure, cybersecurity and virtual reality. Thirty-two campers from five states will be attending.

Monday, June 18, 1:30-3:30 p.m., WVU Academy for Mine Training and Energy Technologies
Mine Simulation ActivityCampers will visit WVU’s simulated underground mine lab in Core, where they will learn to use fire extinguishers, both simulated and real, to put out a mine fire.
Tuesday, June 19, 3p.m., G70 Engineering Sciences Building
Smart Manufacturing Activity
Thorsten Wuest, assistant professor of industrial and management systems engineering, will lead campers in a smart manufacturing activity, which includes a small-scale, automated assembly line that will be used to produce cell phone cases.
Wednesday, June 20, 2:30-5 p.m., 205 Mineral Resources Building
Artificial Knee/Biomedical Engineering Project
Biomedical engineering alumna Alex Anderson will lead campers in building an artificial knee that has to kick a ball across the room.

Grand Challenge: Reverse-Engineer the Brain: Brain Hat/Circuit Quiz Boards
Camp counselors will help campers understand the different parts of the brain by building a brain circuit board quiz.
Thursday, June 21; 9:15-noon, 205 Mineral Resources Building
Grand Challenge: Develop Carbon Sequestration Methods: Solar Powered Tractor Pull
Using a battery pack made by campers, counselors will lead students in a competition to design the body, tires and transmission of a tractor
