Dr Kukureka is Deputy Head of the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham, UK. He has research interests in the mechanical properties and applied physics of polymers - especially polymer tribology. He is also interested in the mechanical reliability of materials for flexible electronic displays and touch screens (plastic electronics), as well as optical fibres and sensors and polymers for biomedical engineering. He collaborates in joint research and educational projects with Dr Darran Cairns, Dr Kostas Sierros and other members of the MAE faculty in a broad variety of initiatives related to the processing, characterization and application of advanced materials systems. 

Research Interests

Polymer tribology: friction and wear of engineering polymers, particularly under non-conformal, rolling-sliding contact in gears, cams and pulleys. Flexible displays: properties and manufacture of thin films of transparent conducting oxides on polymer substrates for flexible display, touch-screen and related applications (plastic electronics). Biomedical engineering: fracture, fatigue and viscoelasticity in medical grade polymers for bioengineering.

Teaching Interests

Dr Kukureka is Director of the annual International Summer Energy School (ISES) in Birmingham for West Virginia high-school teachers as part of the Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program with Professors Cairns and Clark (MAE) and Curtis (EDP). He acts as a liaison for cooperative educational and research projects between WVU and the University of Birmingham in the UK. Approved Graduate Faculty for MAE MS and PhD committees
