Each student is assigned a faculty advisor to guide the student during their time in the College.
You may take graduate courses as an undergraduate student for graduate credit or for undergraduate credit if you meet the criteria listed below. You must receive prior approval from your advisor, the instructor, and the Associate Dean. Approval forms are available in Room 141 ESB or from your advisor. Undergraduates may not enroll in a 600 level course.
Yes. You must fill out the Course Overload Request and obtain approval from your advisor, the Academic Standards Committee member in your department, and the Associate Dean in order to enroll for more than 20 hours.
Students interested in completing a minor formally declares the intent to do so by completing a Minor Request Form. You should discuss your plans with your present advisor and with faculty in the major area of your interest. When you are satisfied that you want to change your major and you meet the entrance requirements for that major, complete the Transfer Request Form in Room 141. The staff will help you with the process.
Your advisor will review your transcript and prepare a 2nd Degree Evaluation of Courses outlining the courses for which you will receive WVU credit. Please meet with your advisor in your first semester at WVU to complete the contract.
It is your responsibility to contact the college to request a transcript be sent to the WVU Office of Admissions. A Transient Application must have been filed, and you need a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 before any transient work will be accepted at WVU.

WVU allows academic forgiveness to some students who are not successful in their first attempt at higher education. To be eligible, a student cannot have been enrolled at a West Virginia state system of higher education institution for at least five calendar years and cannot have been enrolled in any other institution of higher learning during those five years. In order to determine your eligibility, you must complete the Academic Forgiveness Form which is available on the WVU Admissions website. Upon admission to WVU under this policy, you will be credited with the hours earned for the courses completed with a grade of D or higher. Grades earned during any prior enrollment period will not be calculated in your GPA.
Possibly. Take a copy of the course description or course syllabus to your advisor for review. If he determines that it is equivalent to a WVU course, he/she will initiate a Course Substitution Form.
Your advisor will help you determine if courses at another institution are equivalent to courses offered at WVU that can be applied to your degree requirements. You must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 in order to transfer credit from other institutions to WVU.
Visit the Transfer Equivalency System to determine which course(s) transfer as the WVU course(s) you want to take. If the college you want to attend is not on-line, you will need to provide course descriptions for the courses you want to take. The staff of Students Services (Room 141 ESB) will help you complete the Transient application. Take the completed Transient Form to the WVU Office of Admissions. Be sure to take them the course descriptions (if the course is not on the Equivalency page). They will check to see if they have the catalog on file and will determine the equivalent course(s) you need to take at the college you have selected.
If you have an overall GPA of 2.0, a copy of the Transient Form will be sent to the college that you have selected (if not, they will hold the form). You must make arrangements to get admitted and enrolled at that college. After you have completed your course(s), have an official transcript sent to WVU Office of Admissions. Remember to take ONLY the course(s) you have approved on your form. If you want to take other courses, you must get permission from your advisor and complete another form.
WVU offers undergraduate students in good standing the opportunity to request an academic leave of absence. Leave of absence status must be requested before the beginning of the semester for which the leave is desired. Your academic records will remain in active status, and you will retain the right to use certain campus facilities. When you return to WVU, application fees are waived. If you attend any institution of higher education during your leave, an overall average of 2.0 must be obtained on all work attempted in order to be eligible to return. An overall GPA on all work attempted while on leave combined with the WVU GPA is also acceptable.
First, talk with the instructor of the course you are thinking of dropping. If after talking with your instructor you still wish to drop a course, talk with your academic advisor and a financial aid counselor if you have financial aid. Dropping a class may affect your academic status, scholarships, financial aid, health and auto coverage, and military and veteran benefits. A student is considered a full time student with 12 or more semester credit hours.
Students with a cumulative grade-point average below 2.0 are notified on semester grade reports that their academic performance is unsatisfactory. Such students will be placed on probation. If a student is already on probation and his/her G.P.A. falls below the minimum G.P.A. allowed by the University, that student will be eligible for suspension for one year. You must submit an Application for Readmission to the Office of Admissions and you must meet with your advisor. He/She will prepare a contract with you.
All candidates for a baccalaureate with a GPA of 3.8 or higher graduate summa cum laude. Those with a GPA of less than 3.8, but equal to or above 3.6, graduate magna cum laude. Those with a GPA of less than 3.6, but equal to or above 3.4, graduate cum laude.
To earn two degrees at the same graduation date, you must satisfactorily complete at least 158 credits and meet all the requirements of both degree programs. Any additional degree will require an extra 30 hours of approved credit per degree and completion of all degree requirements.
During the second semester, all freshman engineering students are encouraged to choose an engineering major. Only those students who have a GPA of at least 2.25 and have completed ENGR 101, ENGR 102, ENGR 199, CHEM 115, MATH 155 with a grade of C or better and ENGL 101 will be evaluated for admission to a program. By the end of the fourth semester, students who have not completed the requirements for admission to a program will be transferred out of the college and will not be permitted to enroll in upper-division engineering courses until they have been accepted into a major.
If a course was approved as a GEC objective when you took it, it will fulfill that GEC objective and will be applied to the DegreeWorks audit as such.
During your advising appointment before your final semester, you should discuss your status and review the courses that you need to take in your final semester to assure that you will complete all the requirements for your degree. At this time you and your advisor will complete a Graduation Eligibility Worksheet. In your final semester, within the first six weeks of classes, you must complete an application for graduation through your MIX account.
Any revisions to a plan of study, including changes in the ACE membership, necessitate submission of a revised plan of study. If a committee is removed, a Plan of Study Attachment must be included with the new Plan of Study. The previous and the new members of the committee must sign the new Plan of Study.
Courses taken as an undergraduate student may be counted for graduate credit if you had a GPA of at least 3.0 and was within 12 semester hours of graduation when you took the course. The course cannot have been used to complete the requirements for your baccalaureate degree.
You must complete a Application for Transfer of Graduate Credit to WVU form. You must also have an official transcript from the external institution sent to WVU Office of Admissions. A maximum of 12 semester credit hours from other institutions will be accepted for credit. Individual graduate programs can choose to accept fewer transfer credit hours. Only courses with grades of A or B will be accepted.
When a student is admitted to a graduate program as a provisional student, requirements for attaining regular student status must be stated in the letter of admission. Provisional status must be changed to regular status by the end of the semester in which the 18th credit hour is completed. If their status has not been changed by that time, they will be restricted from subsequent registration.

Potential graduates should apply for graduation through their MIX account within six weeks into their final semester. Deadlines will be posted throughout the Engineering Sciences Building and the Mineral Resources Building.
A plan of study must be jointly prepared by the student and the Advisory and Examining Committee by the end of the second semester or before the completion of the 12th course credit hour.
